Join us next summer as we embark on an EPIC adventure of culture, awe-inspring natural wonders, and healing!!
From my first memorable steps in Iceland in 2018, I immediately experienced the transformative power of the otherwordly landscapes that truly felt like walking on another planet. It is, after all, the location of so many fantasy movie sets for a reason! Iceland’s extraordinary geography inspires adventure, reflection, and a deep appreciation for our connection to the natural world. It is for this reason that for this very special edition of GMA retreats shines a spotlight on the ultimate healing force- Mother Nature.
Awaken your sense of adventure and deep healing with Iceland’s cascading waterfalls, towering glaciers, black sand beaches, volcanic landscapes, and steaming geothermal springs. Each moment of this retreat is curated to provide a sense of wonder and awe as nature's raw beauty unfolds around you, from the dancing Northern Lights to dramatic coastlines shaped by fire and ice. Unlike anywhere else on Earth, Iceland is a destination that captivates the soul and offers a once-in-a-lifetime journey you'll never forget.
This itinerary has been intentionally created around Iceland's Culture Festival- the perfect welcome to Icelandic hospitality- and I can't wait to share it with all of you! Learn about mental health in Iceland through the most authentic local experiences, all while having fun and creating lasting friendships and memories. This week is sure to be one you won’t forget!

Menningarnótt is Iceland's annual Culture Festival, and a seriously cool welcome to this stunning country. Menningarnótt transforms the tiny city of Reykjavík (pronounced RAYK-yah-veek) for just one day a year into a vibrant cultural hub of free events including concerts, art and museum exhibits, local cuisine, and nightly fireworks.
Our retreat schedule is purposely unstructured for the day and evening, allowing guests to wander and immerse themselves in the festival events that speak to them! Simply check into your hotel in the city center, and head out to explore and soak up the festive welcome vibes of our home for the next week!

Today we begin after a leisurely morning with a private Women's City and Walking Tour. Discover Reykjavík through the stories of the inspiring women who shaped Iceland’s history and culture on this 4-hour walking tour. Explore iconic landmarks like Hallgrímskirkja, the colorful Old Town houses, and the bustling harbor, alongside hidden gems such as street art, cozy cafés, bookstores, and local music venues. Learn about trailblazers like Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, the world’s first democratically elected female president, and hear how Iceland leads in gender equality today. The tour offers insights into pioneering politicians, artists, activists, and entrepreneurs, providing a deeper understanding of Reykjavík’s unique character and Iceland’s remarkable commitment to equality. We finish the tour by visiting local food vendors for a uniquely Icelandic lunch!
This afternoon we will visit a local cafe for our CE talks in a classic Reykjavík setting, followed by some free time. Then this evening, we have the opportunity to experience a serious bucket list item on our Northern Lights Cruise! Seeing the Northern Lights at sea is a fantastic experience; sailing away from the coastline of Reykjavík and seeing the auroras on the North Atlantic with the city lights in the background is unforgettable! Our expert guides will help us search for the lights (and take photos for us!) while teaching us about the science, legends, and myths surrounding this amazing natural phenomenon. And don't worry- if the lights don't appear this evening, we will have plenty of other opportunities to see them this week!

We begin our day discussing Icelandic happiness, which is fundamentally rooted in a deep connection with nature. We have the extreme privilege of learning our CE material today from none other than Hrefna Guðmundsdóttir, an Icelandic psychologist and published author on Icelandic Happiness as well as the founding chair of the Icelandic Positive Psychology Association. Hrefna's enthusiasm for combining science and storytelling with Iceland's extraordinary nature to create transformative learning experiences will be sure to leave a lasting impression to impact us and our clients back at home!
This afternoon we hit the road for our day trip to lunch at Friðheimar, a one-of-a-kind dining experience right inside a unique greenhouse farm in the heart of Iceland where fresh tomatoes are grown year-round using sustainable geothermal energy. Friðheimar is a perfect example of Icelandic innovation, where nature, sustainability, and fresh flavors come together in harmony.
Lastly, we will unwind from our day at Laugarás Lagoon- a two-story wellness oasis designed for ultimate relaxation in nature, featuring a variety of a private waterfall, hot tubs, wood saunas, cold pools, swim up bars, and geothermal soaking areas including a forest pool, secluded grotto, and infinity pool- all set amid the region’s stunning natural scenery. It's the *ultimate* Icelandic way to end the day- and an excellent chance to practice incorporating Hrefna's teachings from this morning!

Today, we hit the road on our Coastal Tour!! After visiting two of the regions most famously larger than life waterfalls- including one you can walk behind the wall of water- we stop for lunch at a tiny spot specializing in soup served in bread bowls cooked directly in the lava fields! Next we will visit the tiny coastal town of Vík í Mýrdal, the southernmost village in Iceland renowned for its striking black sand beach, Reynisfjara, and the nearby Reynisdrangar basalt sea stacks. After time to explore the charming shops, local cafes, or local church on the hill overlooking town, we head to our accommodation for the afternoon and evening situated in the middle of a secluded lava field. This unreal hotel has rooms with large windows and balconies for cozying up to nature- and perfect for Northern Light viewing if they should appear! Have dinner in the hotel tonight at your leisure, immerse yourself in local nature, or relax ahead our big adventure as it continues tomorrow!

Today's mind bending itinerary is one the *coolest* (pun very much intended) around!! This day is intended to connect us to the healing power of water in it's various forms- one of Iceland's top specialities in my opinion!
We begin the day at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, one of Iceland’s most famous natural landmarks as well as a powerful reminder of climate change. The lagoon is filled with icebergs ranging in color from deep blue to bright white that create a constantly changing and breathtaking landscape.
Next up is an amphibian boat tour sailing among the icebergs in the picturesque scenery of Jökulsárlón, where we will get to taste the 1,000-year-old ice and view wildlife including seals and birds with our guide who explains the geology and facts of the lagoon.
Nearby, we visit one of my favorite spots in all of Iceland- Diamond Beach- where glacier fragments are carried back to shore by the waves scattering across the beach like countless sparkling gems giving the beach it's name. The beach’s deep black volcanic sand provides a striking contrast to the crystal-clear, blue, and white ice chunks, creating a surreal and photogenic landscape that changes constantly with the tide and weather. On sunny days, the ice glistens like real diamonds; in overcast light, it glows with a mysterious blue hue.
Then in a penultimate healing experience, we will get to don a flotation suit for a one-of-a-kind Icelandic curated meditation experience floating in Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon surrounded by icebergs! Feel the rhythm of the icy water, breathe in the pure glacier air, and let the peaceful surroundings work their magic.
Afterwards, we will warm up with cozy hot drinks and enjoy an unbelievable lunch at Fjallsárlón Frost Restaurant which offers breathtaking unobstructed views of the glacier lagoon! The menu highlights local ingredients and traditional Icelandic cuisine.
Finally, we will take a scenic drive to our night's accommodations where we will have an early evening and allow us to integrate the day. At the hotel, we can soak in the hot tubs and saunas, have dinner, and have another Northern Lights viewing opportunity before tucking into bed!

This morning we will experience Iceland’s stunning lava fields and rolling green hills on a friendly Icelandic horse, guided by experienced instructors. The 1.5–2-hour ride is adapted to all skill levels, making it perfect for beginners and seasoned riders alike. After our ride, we will relax with a cozy hot beverage and chat with the staff to learn more about the iconic Icelandic horse and it's link to mental health.
This afternoon, we will head to a gorgeous restaurant set in nature for a truly unique Icelandic seasonal lunch. Then we will experience our closing ceremony surrounded by nature where we can integrate and reflect on our time together, before we head back to Reykjavík for free time this evening.

This morning we will end our time by sharing our experiences over an Icelandic breakfast to honor our journey across this week, and then it’s time to say takk (thank you) and goodbye as we make our way home with Icelandic memories, friendships, and treasures in tow. Our retreat ends after breakfast, and you can spend the day at leisure in Reykjavík if you choose before making your way home!
During our time in Reykjavík, we will be lodging at Center Hotels Plaza located in the heart of downtown which overlooks Reykjavík’s oldest square and is surrounded by shops, restaurants, and cultural venues. On our coastal tour, we will be staying at Fosshotel Nupar which features an unforgettable stay in the middle of lava fields with large windows and balconies for an immersive experience in nature, and Hotel Stracta which features a gorgeous garden with hot tubs and saunas for natural relaxation.

A: This retreat is designed for women mental health and healing professionals (physical, energetic, spiritual) who want to truly immerse themselves in the local Icelandic culture while expanding their professional horizons. This includes psychologists, therapists, counselors, social workers, and psychiatrists and those in the physical health, energetic, or spiritual healing professions. If you want to experience incredible Iceland off the beaten path while making friendships and memories that will last a lifetime, this trip is for you! Experience with travel is not required! If your career isn’t mentioned and you’d like to inquire about joining this retreat, contact me here.
A: Yes! Most of our guests are solo travelers. Great Minds Abroad empowers women to get out of their comfort zones through travel, and solo travel is the perfect way to do so! Because retreat group sizes are small and designed to be immersive, you will get to know your fellow travelers in no time! There will also be opportunities to meet with your fellow travelers through a pre-trip virtual happy hour, as well as a private facebook and whatsapp group. Single rooms may be available for an additional $450 depending on availability, or if you prefer, you can match up with fellow travelers to share a room and start the bonding right away!
A: Icelandic cuisine often consists of international breakfasts, along with soups, meats, veggies, and baked goods. There will be a vegetarian option at all meals, and other dietary accommodations may be available upon request. Fresh Icelandic glacier water will be provided at each meal, and some of the restaurants we will attend may have alcoholic beverage options (not included in cost).
A: August is one of Iceland’s warmest and most comfortable months for travel, featuring lush green landscapes, active wildlife, and plenty of daylight. Temperatures typically range from 50°F to 59°F, though they can occasionally reach up to 68°F or higher. However, Iceland's maritime climate means weather can shift rapidly- you can experience sunshine, wind, and rain all in a single day (and lots of rainbows!). August weather conditions also mark the start of the Northern Lights season, and hopefully we will able to witness them during our time together!
A: Our schedule includes light walking around our destinations. Some of the paths and landscapes will be unpaved and therefore uneven to walk on. Please note that due to the nature of these destinations, some locations may not be handicap accessible. If you require a specific accommodation for this trip, please contact me to discuss prior to booking.
A: The official language spoken in Iceland is Icelandic, however English is widely spoken in all of our destinations. A small phrase in Icelandic goes a long way with locals, and for this reason you will receive a welcome packet closer to our departure that will include basic travel phrases for you to practice if you’d like!
A: Yes, you will need a valid passport with at least two blank pages and an expiration date of at least 3-6 months beyond your departure from Iceland. It is your responsibility to ensure that you get your passport renewed ahead of time if it is set to expire before this time frame, and be aware that the wait times for passport renewals may have increased- it is therefore advised to start this process as early as possible! There is no need for a tourist visa on this retreat, however rules shifting in late 2026 may require an ETIAS approval (see link and up to date info here)- all guests will be informed if this occurs. You will also need proof of a return ticket out of Iceland.
A: No vaccinations are required for entry, however it is recommended travelers are up to date on routine vaccinations such as MMR, DTP, and chickenpox before entering the country of Iceland. For up to date information on vaccines, please visit the CDC website here.
A: You will receive a welcome packet closer to our date of departure containing a packing list, as well as all the relevant trip information and fun additions to make your retreat magical!
A: The local currency is the Icelandic Króna (ISK), 100 ISK = .80 USD as of August 2026. Credit cards are accepted everywhere in Iceland, and cash is generally not needed. ATM's will be located in and around the major cities if desired. If you are planning to exchange your USD for ISK, it is recommended to bring crisp, clean and brand new bills.
A: Yes! Great Minds Abroad has partnered with the Maryland Psychological Association to provide six (6) continuing education (CE) credits for this retreat. Furthermore, these credits will satisfy the diversity and cultural requirements of licensure if needed- a real win-win! Check out more information here!
A: Yes! Because this trip provides continuing education (CE) credits, you can count a portion of your retreat as a business expense. It is recommended that you consult with your tax accountant to determine which portions of the trip are eligible. Going on your dream trip that you can ALSO expense makes this retreat even dreamier!
A: It is MANDATORY that all travelers hold a travel insurance plan ahead of their scheduled departure to cover expenses such as medical issues during your trip, trip interruption or cancellation, or lost goods. This is not included in the retreat price. Emergency evacuation coverage is not required for this retreat, but you may purchase a policy if desired.
A: Iceland's international airport is Keflavík International Airport (KEF), which is located in Keflavík approximately 45 minutes to our lodging and start/end points in Reykjavík. Please note that if you plan to arrive on August 21 for our start date, traffic may be a bit heavier heading into the city due to the festival. Since our schedule is open for the first day to allow guests to soak up the aspects of the festival that speak to them there is no advised arrival time for incoming flights, but for planning purposes it is advised to allow between 30-90 minutes for customs as Iceland's airport is a bit smaller and often has several overnight flights arriving around the same times. Our retreat will end in the afternoon around 5:00 pm, and it is strongly recommended that you pick an evening departure if flying out on the last day to account for travel time and customs.
Airport transfers between KEF and Reykjavík vary in pricing from private transport at $207 USD per person each way, or Iceland's dedicated airport bus to/from Reykjavík which ranges between $15 (center city drop off) and $38 (hotel drop off) USD each way. To give guests pricing flexibility, private transfers have not been included in the cost of this retreat but we are happy to accommodate booking these for you with the possibility of group discounts if multiple guests are traveling at once.
A: Both of these documents can be found on the Legal Hub section of the website.
