Continuing Education (CE) Credit Information for Iceland

Great Minds Abroad in Iceland- Diane Gilman, PsyD and Hrefna Guðmundsdóttir, MA

This program offers six (6) Continuing Education (CE) credit hours for psychologists licensed in the US and Canada, as well as for licensed professional counselors and social workers in the state of Maryland or whose licensing boards accept American Psychological Association (APA) accreditation. For psychiatrists, mental health providers who are licensed in countries outside of the US, or other licensed professionals, please check to make sure your licensing board accepts APA accreditation. These CE credits will also qualify as diversity or cultural requirements if needed for your licensure.


Learning Objectives: 


  1. Describe how eurocentrism influences psychology 
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of mental health statistics in Iceland
  3. Describe various local practices for mental and physical health and well-being in Iceland
  4. Describe access and barriers to mental health care in Iceland
  5. Compare mental health in the United States and Iceland
  6. Discuss Icelandic happiness and how to apply learnings to clients at home


Diane Gilman, PsyD is a licensed psychologist based in Bethesda, MD and the owner of Great Minds Abroad. She specializes in mind-body techniques for stress and chronic pain/illness, as well life transitions, spirituality, and anxiety. Diane holds a Doctor of Psychology degree in Clinical Psychology and a Master of Science degree from The American School of Professional Psychology, as well as a Master of Science degree in General Psychology from Villanova University. She is also certified as a Mental Health Integrative Medicine Provider (CMHIMP). 


Hrefna Guðmundsdóttir, MA is an Icelandic organizational psychologist and received a Masters Degree in Social and Organisational Psychology from London School of Economics and Political Science. She is also a teacher, coach, university lecturer, and author specializing in positive psychology, in resilience, and wellbeing. She is the co-author of the books: Why Are Icelanders So Happy? (2018) and of From Reykjavík to Penang: Stories of Love and Happiness (2025). She was the founding Chair of the Icelandic Positive Psychology Association 2007. Her career includes leadership in education, youth work, and ten years with the Icelandic Directorate of Labour helping people navigate change and build meaningful careers. Today, she combines science, storytelling, and Iceland's extraordinary nature to create transformative learning experiences, helping people and organizations in time of change.   • This program is appropriate for beginning practitioners and no prerequisites are required.
