Vietnam- with it's jaw-dropping landscapes, unbelievably delicious and cheap street food, and especially the most generous and resilient people I have ever met- have profoundly changed my life. Since my first visit in 2019, Vietnam has been my go-to response to the question "So what's your favorite country?", even after visiting 54 countries around the globe. If you know me, you know that my love for Vietnam runs deep (and often teary!), and I am forever planning my next trip back "home".
This itinerary has been lovingly created over my past 4 visits to Northern Vietnam. It highlights my most favorite parts and people of this country, and I am so honored and excited to share it with everyone! I am also incredibly proud to say that our time in Vietnam is made possible through a partnership with Easia Travel, a women-owned and run Hanoi-based company that is leading the industry on sustainability, cultural preservation, and child protection and welfare for the past 25 years. To learn more about their efforts and mission, go here.
Our time in Vietnam takes us beyond the tourist zones and immerses us deep in the culture, mental health, and Indigineous healing of the northern regions of the country. Through a variety of dreamlike locations in the north, we have been invited into family homes, private ceremonies, and partaking in local ethnic customs and traditions. Learn about mental health in Vietnam through the most authentic local experiences, all while having fun and creating lasting friendships and memories. This week is sure to be one you won’t forget!

“Xin Cháo” means hello in Vietamese! Today, we arrive in the bustling yet quaint capital of Vietnam- Hanoi (AKA my home away from home)! Our retreat begins with an authentic Vietnamese welcome dinner at 6:00 pm to meet and greet your fellow travelers and share in some delicious local food specialties! After dinner, take some time to settle in by visiting the hotel spa for a seriously cheap massage, explore the city nightlife, or tuck in to your hotel bedroom decorated with locally handcrafted decor ahead of your first full day tomorrow!
Today we explore the roots of Hanoi, starting with a special private tea ceremony in a quiet oasis for a deeper knowledge about the history of tea and its origins in Vietnam. Here you’ll be greeted by the tea master who will sample 3 types of sacred tea “from the field to the cup”- including a very special lotus tea unique to this tea house. Next we will visit the nearby Temple of Literature- the first university in Vietnam built in 1070 with gorgeous architecture. For lunch, we will dine at KOTO (Know One, Teach One)- a restaurant known for 'dining with a difference' where the proceeds support at-risk and impoverished youth to empower and train them for stable, safe living situations and careers. After an afternoon break, we will meet with a local therapist to learn about mental health in Vietnam in an interactive discussion. Then, the evening is yours to explore Hanoi at your own pace!
Today we continue exploring Hanoi starting with a private cooking class that begins with a visit to a local market for groceries! After our Chef teaches us about our ingredients and Vietnamese culinary culture, we head back to the house for tea and preparation of several traditional Vietnamese dishes for our lunch! Next up is a visit to the Women's Museum to view it's collection of 28,000 objects, photos, costumes, books, and letters highlighting the history of women in Vietnam. This important museum highlights traditions of various ethnic groups and also pays tribute to the courage and great sacrifice of women during the wars.
After an afternoon break, we have the privilege of being invited to spend an evening with a local family in Hanoi. This family is very special as they had 4 daughters, bucking tradition to allow the women to step out of normed gender roles (quite revolutionary for the time!). Stepping away from the busy streets to a typical Hanoian alley, we will enjoy a delicious meal of their family recipes from Hanoi while we listen to and share valuable stories about family, culture, customs, and traditions. Afterwards, the father and head of the family (a veteran in his mid-80's who you'll immediately want to hug!) will happily share his stories and especially his passion for music by singing folk songs and playing traditional musical instruments he made himself! Finally, we will see the family altar and learn about how they honor their departed loves ones.
Today we say tạm biệt (goodbye) to Hanoi, as we head to the majestic limestone mountains of Ninh Binh (pronounced nin bin)! On the way, we will stop at the village of Te Ho to meet with a local artisan and his family to learn about Te Ho art, local Vietnamese toys. After a traditional demonstration, we will get a chance to make our own souvenirs based on our Vietnamese zodiac signs! Next, we arrive in Ninh Binh to dine on local family recipes with lovely family in their home in the heart of a small village surrounded by limestone peaks! After lunch, we embark on a local wooden boat called a sampan for a stunning ride through Van Long Nature Reserve to explore the surreal landscape of rainforests and ancient mountains reflected in the aquamarine river waters. Finally, we check into our gorgeous boutique bungalows on a private lake nestled in the limestone. Dinner tonight is at our resort, and you can spend the rest of the evening unwinding in our infinity pool or from your dreamy bungalow front porch if you choose!
This morning we get the opportunity to explore more of Ninh Binh's beauty- this time by land! We set off to explore the unreal Bich Dong Pagoda and Hang Mua Viewpoint (where you'll have a seriously stunning view of the UNESCO Heritage Trang An Landscape), along with gorgeous cave temples and a giant lotus lake! Seriously, don't even bother putting your cameras away here... After lunch at a local restaurant for more regional cuisine, the afternoon and evening are yours to explore the town or relax at our resort!
This morning, we depart for the infamous Ha Long Bay- another UNESCO World Heritage site- where we embark on an overnight cruise on a small ship through Bai Tu Long Bay (a quieter and less traveled section of the bay!). This is one of the most beautiful landscapes I've ever seen, and a cruise the MOST peaceful way to experience it! After a welcome lunch onboard, we will explore the hidden Thien Canh Son Cave followed by a leisurely trip to the white sandy beach at Hon Co Island for relaxing, swimming, or kayaking. Finally, we will board the ship for dinner before tucking into bed in our cabins!
In the morning, choose to wake up to enjoy the sunrise over the aquamarine waters and limestone karsts of the bay with a cup of tea or coffee followed by onboard Tai Chi on deck! Then the cruise will tour around the bay to reach Vung Vieng fishing village, where we can see local life via a rustic row-boat.
Next we depart for our final destination, Yên Tử Mountain, a sacred site where the Trúc Lâm Zen (Bamboo Forest Zen) tradition of Vietnamese Buddhism was founded by Điều Ngự Giác Hoàng, the Buddha Enlightened King, Tran Nhan Tong. Our gorgeous hotel is designed to reflect the spiritual and cultural essence of this sacred energy site, and tonight after a special dinner you can engage with the spirit of this location however you'd like. Whether taking the sacred pilgrimage path to the Bronze Pagoda on the mountain (a challenging but deeply reflective journey via steps and cable car), exploring Zen traditions of self-reflection at our hotel facilities including Buddhist meditation, or partaking in the Night Village Festival at the resort's local village featuring a vibrant cultural showcase inspired by the local Dao Thanh Y ethnic group featuring dancing, games, and seasonal blessings- you are sure to have a memorable last evening!!
Happy International Women's Day!! What better way to celebrate than with each other this morning in a gorgeous setting nestled inside ancient and sacred healing energy! Our final morning begins with breakfast at your leisure, followed by a very special closing ceremony including elements of local Buddhist breathing meditations, journaling, and reflection time. We'll have a few hours for lunch and some last memories on your own, then transfer back to Hanoi to finish our tour.
Our hotels have been proudly hand-selected for sustainability, such as recycling programs and preservation of cultural heritage and lands, and ethical treatment of all who are involved in our stay.
Our time in Hanoi will be spent at Splendid Grand Hotel and Spa, located in the heart of the city tucked into a tiny alley oasis you'll soon feel at home in. This special family-owned hotel is my absolute happy place and home away from home for my last 4 visits, and is home to my (and soon to be YOUR!) Vietnamese family.
Our lodging in Ninh Binh will be at the stunning lakeside bungalows of An's Eco Garden resort in the limestone mountains. This unforgettable boutique hotel is also one of my happy places, and it's unique infinity pool and luxe thatched roof bungalows with wide glass windows will soon feel like paradise to you too!
Our time in Bai Tu Long Bay will be spent aboard the 24-cabin Dragon Legend Cruise boat. This luxury cruise embraces Vietnamese cultural decor and experiences, and is one of the most peaceful and scenic ways to explore the bay!
Finally, our lodging at Yên Tử Mountain will be at the stunningly gorgeous Legacy Yen Tu resort, which features handcrafted materials and ancient construction methods by nearby villagers living in the surroundings for generations, creating a harmonious and pure atmosphere right from within the local community.

A: This retreat is designed for women mental health and healing professionals who want to truly immerse themselves in the local Vietnamese culture while expanding their professional horizons. This includes psychologists, therapists, counselors, social workers, and psychiatrists and those in the physical health or spiritual healing professions. If you want to experience gorgeous Vietnam off the beaten path while making friendships and memories that will last a lifetime, this trip is for you! Experience with travel is not required! If your career isn’t mentioned and you’d like to inquire about joining this retreat, contact me here.
A: Yes! Most of our guests are solo travelers. Great Minds Abroad empowers women to get out of their comfort zones through travel, and solo travel is the perfect way to do so! Because retreat group sizes are small and designed to be immersive, you will get to know your fellow travelers in no time! There will also be opportunities to meet with your fellow travelers through a pre-trip virtual happy hour, as well as a private facebook and whatsapp group. Single rooms may be available for an additional $350 depending on availability, or if you prefer, you can match up with fellow travelers to share a room and start the bonding right away!
A: Vietnamese cuisine consists mainly of rice in various forms, meat, fruits, and veggies. There will be a vegetarian option at all meals, and other dietary accommodations may be available upon request. Many of the restaurants we will attend may have alcoholic beverage options (not included in cost). Fresh water will be provided at most meals, and some meals will include coffee, tea, or juice as well.
A: Spring in Vietnam is fairly mild with less humidity than usual, making it the perfect time to go because there will be less chance of rain but the foliage should be nice and green! Across the north, temperatures vary due to changes in location, but daily highs should be a pleasant average around mid 70's and the average nighttime lows around low-mid 60's.
A: Our schedule includes light walking around our destinations. Some of the paths and streets will be unpaved and/or uneven to walk on. Some of our optional activities will include heavier walking or trekking, as well as kayaking. Please note that due to the nature of these destinations, some locations may not be handicap accessible. If you require a specific accommodation for this trip, please contact me to discuss prior to booking.
A: The official language spoken in Vietnam is Vietnamese. All of the locals we will encounter on our tour will either speak English or we will be able to converse via translator. On your free time, not all Vietnamese will speak English, especially those of the older generations and as we get further outside of main cities (but google translate is lifesaver here!). A small phrase in Vietnamese goes a long way with locals, and for this reason you will receive a welcome packet closer to our departure that will include basic travel phrases for you to practice if you’d like!
A: Yes, you will need both a valid passport with at least one blank page and at least 6 months validity before expiring, as well as visa to enter Vietnam. It is your responsibility to ensure that you get your passport renewed ahead of time if it is set to expire, and to secure your visa on time! It is important to be aware that the wait times for passport renewals may have increased, and it is therefore advised to start this process as early as possible! All information needed for the Vietnam visa can be found at the website here.
A: It is recommended travelers are up to date on routine vaccinations such as MMR, DTP, and chickenpox before entering the country of Vietnam. It is also suggested that travelers additionally obtain Hepatitis A and B vaccines. Proof of these vaccines are not required. For up to date information on vaccines, please visit the CDC website here.
A: You will receive a welcome packet closer to our date of departure containing a packing list, as well as all the relevant trip information and fun additions to make your retreat magical!
A: The local currency is the Vietnamese Dong (VND), which is converted to USD when using the formula that 100,000 VND = 3.82 USD (as of July 2025). Credit cards may be accepted at major business locations, but many market stalls, artisans, cafes, and street restaurants are cash only. ATMs are located throughout the city of Hanoi, including several right near our lodging, but are more sparse as we move outside the city so it is recommended to plan ahead and take out cash before this portion of our trip. Additionally, most Vietnamese will appreciate receiving tips in VND as it can be hard to exchange USD (all of your tips are included on this trip except for optional activities and dinners during free time). If you are planning to exchange your USD for VND, it is recommended to bring crisp, clean and brand new bills, and there is an excellent currency exchange option for this near our Hanoi hotel.
A: Yes! Great Minds Abroad has partnered with the Maryland Psychological Association to provide seven (7) continuing education (CE) credits for this retreat. Furthermore, these credits will satisfy the diversity and cultural requirements of licensure if needed- a real win-win! Check out more information here!
A: Yes! Because this trip provides continuing education (CE) credits, you can count a portion of your retreat as a business expense. It is recommended that you consult with your tax accountant to determine which portions of the trip are eligible. Going on your dream trip that you can ALSO expense makes this retreat even dreamier!
A: It is MANDATORY that all travelers hold a travel insurance plan ahead of their scheduled departure to cover expenses such as medical issues during your trip, trip interruption or cancellation, or lost goods. This is not included in the retreat price. Emergency evacuation coverage is not required for this retreat, but you may purchase a policy if desired.
A: The closest airport is Noi Bai International Airport (HAN), which is located just outside Hanoi approximately one hour to our lodging and start point in Hanoi. It is suggested that travelers arrive at a minimum of four hours ahead of the retreat start time at 6:00 pm to allow for customs and airport transfers. Airport transfer from HAN to our hotel in Hanoi is included in the retreat price, and pick up coordination will be arranged closer to the retreat date. HAN is also the closest airport to fly out of from our retreat end- about 3 hours away (without traffic). While return transfers are not included in the retreat price we are happy to assist in their arrangement for you. Our retreat will end by 12:00 pm, and it is strongly recommended that you pick a late evening departure if flying out on the last day to account for travel time and customs. Please note that departures before our ending time of 12:00 pm will not be possible, as this will disrupt our closing ceremony.
A: The safety of both the guests on this retreat as well as the impact of our travels on the local communities are the highest priority. Several measures have been implemented to ensure this retreat runs safely, including a smaller group size, small lodging size where possible, private dining and events wherever possible, and focusing on disinfection and good hygiene practices at our lodging, restaurants, and private transport vehicles. Sanitation items and masks can also be provided as needed. All efforts will continue to be made to remain up to date with the latest information on the COVID-19 statistics and vaccination procedures in Vietnam, as well as pandemic-related events around the world.
Travelers to Vietnam are no longer required to be vaccinated for COVID-19. The CDC continues to recommend the vaccine as a safety precaution, but proof of vaccination will not be required for this retreat. Please note that due to changing guidelines, a negative COVID-19 test may be required to travel on this retreat.
You may cancel your reservation at any time, for any reason, more than 3 months before departure to receive a full refund less the non-refundable $500 deposit and less any and all applicable credit card transaction fees and costs. Should the risk of traveling on this retreat outweigh the benefits, this retreat will be rescheduled to a later date and you will have the option to move your reservation or receive a full refund less the non-refundable $500 deposit and less any and all applicable credit card transaction fees and costs. Please note that there may be slight pricing differences for a rescheduled departure due to changing costs on the ground, and all efforts will be made to reduce these costs when possible.
A: Both of these documents can be found on the Legal Hub section of the website.
